Up close and personal, you can see their beaks and talons and learn about the adaptations which make them supreme hunters of the sky. You will learn what makes them animal heroes: why the Barn Owl is called the “Farmer’s Friend”, why the Great Horned Owl is an apex predator indicating the health of the environment or how Turkey Vultures help prevent diseases which could kill humans. You will come away marveling at home beneficial these raptors are for the environment and why they must be protected. Feathers and wings will be available for touching and vocalizations will be played.
SWON: Tech Fun for Kids of All Ages
Summer slide doesn’t happen only with reading. Our students lose ground in math and critical thinking skills too. But having fun while continuing to learn is part of what library summer programming is about. Our program will introduce you to Makey-Makey and Cubelets. Makey-Makey is an "Invention Kit for Everyone." Check out one example in the video.
Cubelets Robot Construction for Kids are magnetically connectable blocks possessing different functions. There are Sensing blocks, Thinking blocks and Acting blocks. You can combine them in countless ways and they can be used with LEGOs to create whatever sort of creature you can imagine. After a brief introduction, you’ll be making music with a mini-keyboard you create and using LEGOs to fashion your own moving and sensing robots. The connection to heroes may be tenuous, but the learning isn’t.
Both kits will be available for you to borrow any time during the year on our Tech to Lend Page.
