Book Boot Camp: Book Boot Camp was a crowd favorite and a great way to keep kids moving after school and during the summer months.  During this presentation, Cate will share the successes (and some challenges) of her adventures in holding a fitness activity within the boundaries of a small library meeting room.  Booklists, activity plans, music/videos ideas, and appropriate snack ideas will be provided to participants.

Toddlers in Motion: Guided Busyness Healthy toddlers are naturally busy human beings. Their bodies are often in motion as they discover the world around them. In this session, we will explore ways to guide toddler busyness through books, music, crafts, and games and encourage wellness through easy and healthful snacks. (Snack recipes take into account toddler allergies and promote small motor skill development.)

On Your Mark, Get Set... STEAM!: Exercise your brain with some fun ideas for adding Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) to your Summer Reading programs for kids in Kindergarten to Grade 5.

MVP Dance Fit: Rachel and Gabi from MVP Dance Fit studio will talk about fitness training for kids, how to get a dance studio to come to your library and even teach us some moves!

Cara Frank & Kim Smithers will be presenting about Clermont County's 3-5 year old activities.

Get Outside BookClub: The Potential through Parks and Libraries:With today's children living sedentary lifestyles, it is imperative to get our kids active outdoors. Explore how books act as catalysts for getting kids to engage the outdoors through a partnership between the Dayton Metro Library and Five Rivers MetroParks.

Speaker Biographies

Kim Thompson: My name is Kimberly Thompson. I earned my BA in Education and M Ed in Counseling at the University of Louisville. I earned my MLIS at the University of Kentucky. I am fond of saying I bleed purple. (UK fans will get that one.) I am a Children's Librarian with the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Cheviot Branch. I program for children ages birth through twelve years. I have worked with children and families for about 20 years as a teacher, social worker, and librarian, with a few years off in between to be a full time homemaker. To quote Sir Francis Bacon, "Knowledge itself is power." It brings me joy to share information with children and families to increase their knowledge base and empower them to become lifelong learners.

Cate Malone: Cate Malone began her library career in 2011 first at the Clermont County Public Library and later moving to the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County where she served as the Children’s Librarian and later the Branch Manager at the Avondale location.  She is currently the Team Lead of the Information and Reference Department of the Main Library.  Cate received an MLS from the University of Kentucky and an MA in Communications with a focus on Children’s Media and Education Television from Ohio University.  While serving as a Children’s Librarian, Cate tailored her work to meet the needs of the community by providing programming focused on healthy living and exercise.  She piloted a children’s program at the Avondale Branch titled, Book Boot Camp to increase young patron’s interest in both reading and being active.  An exercise enthusiast herself, Cate enjoyed leading kids in different types of exercise from jumping jacks to yoga during her weekly program which also included a healthy snack and books themed around healthy choices.

Cherese Capadona: Cherese Capadona, is the K-5 Children’s Librarian for the MidPointe Library System in Middletown. She started out in law and wanted to pursue a career as a children’s and family advocate, but after she took her young daughter to storytime, she was in love! Cherese realized that she could be an advocate for children and families as a librarian by sharing her love of community, books and reading. Fifteen years later, Cherese has presented youth services programs for children birth to fifth grade and teens in grades six to twelve and still loves her job. Some of her favorite programs include, Cryptozology, Mini-Comic Con, The Barbie Birthday Bash, and Science by the Slice.

Cherese loves all things crafty. She loves reading and collecting comic books, playing videogames, and spending time outdoors with her family, which includes 235 pounds worth of dog.

MVP Dance Fit: MVP Dance Fit studio owner Rachel Lee Vickhouse will talk with us about fitness programs for kids, from dance classes to cross-fit classes for kids to mommy and me fitness programs, they do it all. We'll also have the opportunity to get up and dance!

Kim Smithers: Kim Smithers has been a Youth Services Specialist with the Clermont County Public Library System for 11 years. She works with all youth birth to 17 years of age. She is the Chairperson for the Library’s Ready to Read Committee and specializes in early literacy. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Elementary Education from Northern Kentucky University. Prior to working for the library system, she taught preschool through sixth grade, both regular and special education, in the public school system.

Dorri Hegyi: Dorri is a children's librarian at the Miamisburg Branch of the Dayton Metro Library system, preforms her daily duties of super librarian (reference, storytimes, class instruction, and so much more) with a smile within the confines of the library walls and is always excited when she can get outdoors. She tries to not smash spiders (most of the time).

Joshua York: Joshua currently works as an Education Supervisor for Five Rivers MetroParks, where he oversees conservation-based programming for a variety of different audiences that aim to foster connections and promote advocacy for the natural world.
