Pairing fiction and nonfiction texts can be a boon for teaching elementary, middle-grade, and high school students, creating a more dynamic learning environment while boosting understanding. Teaching “text sets” (fiction and non-fiction books on a related topic) has been shown to increase student interest, improve comprehension, and bolster critical thinking skills.* The more familiar narrative fiction introduces the topic and acts as an educational “bridge” to more in-depth nonfiction study.
