STEAM subjects are exciting and have great potential to captivate young children. When you expose them to science and math at an early age you are building their confidence, and unleashing their potential.
 
Librarians and early childhood educators can step in to make STEM learning (a national priority) more playful, fun and hands-on. Webinar attendees will learn innovative, playful ways to support Early Literacy and STEAM through programs, services, collections, and spaces.

Learning Outcomes

After participating in this webinar, attendees will:
  • Understand relevant research that supports the importance of STEAM and early literacy
  • Discover new ideas for infusing science, technology, engineering, art, and math into existing programs
  • Find inspiration for creating new STEAM learning opportunities for young children and their families
  • Learn how to spark curiosity, exploration, and discovery in young children and unleash their potential to innovate and problem-solve.
  • Play a critical role in meeting a national priority, by providing year-round access to, STEAM-focused, participatory learning opportunities with substantial learning outcomes.

Who Should Attend

Librarians who serve youth ages 0-5 and their families, youth services managers, branch managers, and library directors. Public librarians working in other areas, library school students who are interested in serving youth, and anyone who works with young children and their families.

Instructors

This webinar will be presented by ALSC's Early Childhood Programs and Services Committee members Stephanie Prato and Stephanie Saba.

Stephanie C. Prato is the Director of Play to Learn Services at the Fayetteville Free Library (FFL), NY. With experience in youth services, community outreach, leadership, instruction, and technology, she has developed innovative programs for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged children. She is an active member of the American Library Association and serves as a member of the Early Childhood Programs and Services Committee of the Association for Library Service to Children.
 
Stephanie Saba is a Senior Librarian at the San Mateo County Libraries in California. She is a member of the American Library Association and serves on the Early Childhood Programs and Services Committee of the Association for Library Service to Children. She will begin a two year appointment as a member of the Public and Cultural Programs Advisory Committee for ALA in July 2016. She is also a member of the California Library Association and is currently serving on the California Young Reader Medal Committee.

ALSC is offering this webinar free of charge. During the webinar presentation, due to platform capacity, only the first 100 attendees to log in will be able to access the free webinar. However, all registrants will receive a direct link to the webinar archive post-webinar.
