Steps to Becoming a More Inclusive and Diverse Library for Young Readers

How diverse are the services and programs that are offered in your library? Could you be even more effective in creating a diverse and inclusive place for your users and community? This interactive and informative program will discuss the importance of creating diverse and inclusive learning spaces in libraries.

 

Andrea will highlight dozens of multicultural and inclusive books that will appeal to young readers and will provide strategies for participants to engage readers, increase access to diverse content, and foster culturally competent learning environments.  

 

Attendees will learn how to:

 

  • Build and promote radically inclusive library collections.
  • Evaluate and select multicultural literature for authenticity and appropriateness
  • Better advocate for diverse resources

 

Andrea Jamison ~ Biography

 

Andrea Jamison is a school librarian, aspiring children’s book author, and doctoral student at Dominican University, where she is exploring the lack of diversity in children's literature. In addition to her full-time duties in librarianship, she is a full-time mom, Board Member for ALA's Ethnic & Multicultural Information Exchange Roundtable, the committee chair for the EMIERT Distinguished Librarian Award and the David Cohen/EMIERT Multicultural Award, a reviewer for the School Library Journal, a reviewer for Indieview, freelance writer, and social justice advocate.  She also works with the Illinois School Library Media Association as a member of their advocacy committee.  Andrea enjoys reading to children and speaks nationally on issues related to diversity.

FREE for employees of Supporting Member Institutions 
$20 for members in our Ohio service area 
$25 for everyone else
