Like many of you, I subscribe to a variety of sources which at least gives me the illusion that I'm keeping up with things. One of the lists I've been on for nine years or so is the ACRL Science & Technology Section Discussion List through ALA (STS-L). Even though I'm not currently a practicing scientific librarian, I still find frequently interesting and useful posts. This week I found out about the Science Retention Librarian Blog by Erin O'Toole.  Erin is contributing to several important conversations with her blog.
1)      How can an academic library (e.g. front line staff) contribute to improved student retention?
2)      How can an academic library contribute to improved student retention in the sciences?
3)      How can an academic library contribute to improved student outcomes for women in science?
Our Academic Special Interest Group focused on the first point for a year and I’m convinced that library staff at all levels can help support better student retention, for all students and all disciplines. Erin’s work, by focusing on a specific targeted study area, helps highlight how many options we truly have.
For even more specifics Erin suggests you check out the ACRL’s Theme Poster Session at ALA in Las Vegas: “How can librarians assist with student diversity and retention in the STEM and health science fields at their institutions?”
Also in Las Vegas a Panel Program: “Sticking with STEM: How the Academic Library Can Help to Retain Successful Students”
