In the debate about why libraries matter, we (the pro-library side) often drift into defensive postures, or even worse, whiny complaints about how ignorant the other side ("everything's on the internet so it's obvious that we don't need libraries") sounds. In the course of my 'future of libraries' research, I've watched/read lots and lots of pro-library pieces, most of which were so whiny, so defensive, I could hardly get through them. And I'm on their side! Finally, Andrea Owens (teacher/librarian at Cincinnati Country Day School) shared this video with me about why libraries matter. If you've seen better, please let me know. It's the best I've seen to date.

And if you think that these stories are only true in big cities, that's not so. Last month, at a gathering of rural and small town library directors in Southwest Ohio, stories were shared about watching kids until the single parent could get there and the gratitude for the homework help received.
