SWON Visits - Ursuline Academy

Like many of you, Julie Burwinkel is involved with her school’s broader community, beyond strictly library functions. Julie is the long time librarian at Ursuline Academy (ursulineacademy.org), a serious college preparatory high school for girls. Uncommon among librarians, Julie does not teach an English or a writing class. But she does Chair the school’s Critical Thinking Committee. It would be difficult to say that librarians care more about supporting/developing critical thinking skills in young people than do teachers, but we certainly care as much. And if we’re the type to think strategically and conceptually, working on this kind of institutional committee is a great fit. And it allows for a greater understanding and appreciation for how librarians may be effective partners in all kinds of learning initiatives.

Julie shared with me her favorite educational blogger, Will Richardson. According to Julie, he cuts through the junk and tells things the way they are. Here’s a Ted talk Will gave a few years ago. For more from Will, check out his blog at willrichardson.com.
