SWON Visits – Technical Services SIG

This year I was hoping to attend at least one of each of our Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings. We have twelve active groups and some groups have multiple ‘chapters’ so there’s a lot going on! One group that I’ve been able to spend more time with is our Technical Services SIG. They deal with many of the nuts and bolts of library operations, whether it’s a large urban public library, special academic library full of rare books, art museum library or county-wide system spread over many branches. What’s great about these quarterly get-togethers is the free and open exchange of problems/ideas/solutions. We tour technical services departments, examine work flow, share our successes, laugh at our ‘failures’ (aka learning opportunities).
The technical services department of Clermont County Public Library was impressive. A pretty good sized county-wide library system with 10 branches, the branch housing technical services sees a lot of activity. Workflow is well thought out, labeling is clear, tasks are broken down. Our group spent a few minutes by this machine (pictured) which resurfaces DVDs to extend their life. Our guide, Joel Walters, Technical Services Manager, shared that with these machines, they can get up to 50 more plays from a DVD than without. They more than pay for themselves in the first year, in their system with their volume. The discussion continued, covering details of machinery/costs etc. A very worthwhile SIG meeting!
There’s one more meeting this year, October 21 at 2pm. We’ll be touring the region’s largest technical services department at the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library’s main branch downtown. You won’t want to miss this opportunity!
For a quick list of all remaining SIG meetings for the year (or any other type of event) go to our Calendar on the top menu bar, mouse over and down to All Upcoming Events and select whatever sub-group interests you to the right. For a full list or monthly view, just select Calendar.
