Telling a Library Story, Again and Broadly

As you may know, this year there was finally an excellent video that showed what public libraries are about today. Thank you Queens Public Library (http://swonlibraries.org/news/177851/Best-Why-Libraries-Matter-Video-To-Date.htm). Now Gale Cengage has made a beautiful video (http://mystory.gale.com/watch) illustrating the positive effects of libraries, starting with a school library, on a family. Unlike the Queens Library video, which shows real patrons, Gales’ video story is fictional. It includes real statistics, briefly inserted, showing the contribution of libraries’ towards educational success and even success in life. What I particular like and think is new, is that the video shows the impact of three major library types, school, public and academic.

To be fair, Gale Cengage sells products to all library types so they’re motivated to come up with an advocacy video, but the point is that they’ve done it, and done it well. A big thanks to Andrea Eshelman, Gale's school sales representative in Ohio who spoke with a few of us yesterday. She convinced me that Gale can advocate not only for school media specialists, libraries in general, but also help teachers and curriculum administrators spend wisely and well. Andrea may be contacted at  andrea.eshelman@cengage.com.
