November 12th was the first meeting of the Northern Miami Valley Children’s Literature and Review (CLEAR) group meeting. Yay! Cherie Roeth, Director of the Bradford Public Library, had put in the time to call libraries from across the county as well as the schools she serves. The group is open to library staff and teachers and as a former teacher and principal, Cherie understands how important it is to get libraries and schools working together. As all of our CLEAR groups* do, we discussed books we’ve read along the following lines:
- Age range
- Reading level
- Topic and brief synopsis
- Quality of the writing, illustrations, photography
- Intended audience
- Recommended or not (5 levels, but we spoke plainly!)
After we shared our reviews, each participant selected their next 12 books in round robin fashion. Picking out your free books is pretty fun, I must say.
After our meeting I toured the library and found an interesting spot. It’s not every library that has a dedicated Sci-Fi/Fantasy section with comfortable chairs and canvas posters of sci-fi book covers. It seems that John Scalzi** lives in the area and donated funds for the nook. One of the library staff came up with the idea of turning his book covers into art*** for the walls and voila! The collection was enticing and the artwork helped delineate a space in a not large library.
Thanks Cherie, for getting the North Miami Valley CLEAR group going!
*If it’s one thing libraries spend a lot of money on, it’s collections. CLEAR is a way to make sure you’re getting your monies worth. Based on the reviews and conversation I heard, there will be some productive collection development decisions made this year in Darke County. If you’d like to join your nearby CLEAR group or just come for a visit to see if you think this format will work for you, contact me and we’ll get something set up.
**John Scalzi is an author of science fiction and non-fiction and has won many writing awards including the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2013 for Redshirts. His blog Whatever is entertaining.
