SWON Libraries Weeekly

But I don't have space for a makerspace!

3D printers may be the “killer app” of the makerspace and they definitely have the “wow factor” that might justify the cost, but if your library is anything like many of the libraries I’ve worked for, it may not matter how useful a 3D printer is because the money’s just not there. Or maybe it is, but you aren’t sure if there’s enough interest in your community to warrant spending the money. In the latter case, you might be able to, say, borrow a printer from SWON and give it a test-drive in your community, but that’s not the only way!

3D printers are, ultimately, a tool, just like a hammer and a nail. Okay, maybe more like a jigsaw or perhaps a lathe… but the point is, you use them to make things. That’s the “make” in makerspace! And you can definitely “make” without one. Do you think of a sewing machine as part of a makerspace? Cincinnati Public Library’s Makerspace has one! A button maker is cheap and always popular. How many of you already have Ellison or AccuCut die-cut machines? Can you put them out for the public? The Silhouette Cameo is a more affordable option than a 3D printer, and produces a lot of bang for your buck. Then there’s the little things: paper cutters, scanners, cheap cameras, moldable plastics, Sugru…

Making isn’t, ultimately, about having the biggest, baddest equipment. Making is about creating. And I bet many of you are doing that in your libraries already. Meanwhile, if you’d like to learn more about affordable making, join us for our newest Level-Up Lab, “Makerspaces on a Budget” on June 28th, led by yours truly!

Already invested in that 3D printer and asking yourself “Now what”? We’ve got a lab for that too, coming up on July12th. I hope to see you there, or at one of our other exciting Level-Up Labs.

Level Up Labs

Interested in more Level-Up labs? Join Melanie for "Women and Leadership" as we discuss barriers to our own success and how we can address those barriers -- whether they come from inside us, or outside us, sometimes in the guise of societal expectations/biases. Expect to gain clarity on what you'd most like to focus on in the next 90 days for your life and career. All Level-Up Labs are free, but you must register as space is limited.

SWON Cookout

SWON, the Ethnic Librarians SIG, and the New to Libraries Network will be sponsoring this Summer Cook Out that will be available and free to everyone!

There will be food, music, and games! Invite your family to come along for the fun.

This Summer Cook Out will take place at the gorgeous Warren County Armco Park in Lebanon, OH. We'll be grilling at Shelter House #28, which is right next to the lake and a playground for any little ones that join us.

This is a casual event, but please register so we can get a head count for food!

Families welcome... and encouraged!
