I was fortunate enough to be able to attend ALA Orlando Annual Conference. Fortunate enough to see the ongoing outpouring of support Orlando residents gave to one another and to see#OrlandoUnited. Fortunate enough to meet with colleagues to share ideas, concerns and approaches. Fortunate enough to meet new vendors who are excited about their products and the partnerships possible with library staff who ‘get it.’
Even though we recognize and know the power of the individual, how one person can make a difference in so many other lives, we must equally balance the power of community. A supportive community engenders healing, growing, and yes, love. A supportive community does not focus on the ‘us and them’ view, but on the ‘all of us together.’ We don’t have to ignore our differences, but we can respectfully and with civility disagree. A supportive community can transform.
A supportive community includes all stakeholders: customers, neighbors, staff, trustees, vendors. Attending a conference of this size gives you the 360 degree view of our supportive community. It’s inspiring!
One way to give back and to share conference insights with you is to invite presenters to give webinars on their talks. Over the coming year, we will be inviting presenters of all types to come on a Google hangout or webinars so that you can ‘meet’ them, too. You can ask questions and find out more. This is your chance to cover more ground, see folks you may have missed at the conference, or perhaps the conference timing or budget did not work for you this year. We understand -- we have to choose what we attend too.
To save you even more time, we’re collecting other webinars and events of interest and adding them to our calendar, a free-guide, so that our website can be a one-stop shop for you to find the best and best-priced events available for our field atswonlibraries.org/events
We can only transform together,
