SWON Scours the Web, So You Don’t Have To
The good news is: There’s a lot of free and low-cost training out there. The bad news is: It can take a lot of time and effort to find it. And I should know -- I do it all the time!
There’s great information about training available through many excellent mailing lists and newsletters. I can also vouch for that, since I’m subscribed to most of them. But it can be too time-consuming to plow through them all, no matter how good the information is.
We get it! If we’ve got your eyeballs on this newsletter right now, we count ourselves lucky.
That’s why we make an effort to make
a “one stop shop” for free and low-cost webinars from around the country. Many state library organizations and consortia offer tons of free content, if only you know to look for it. Lucky for you, I do! We also look out for in-person training and conferences, with a focus on what’s local and relevant to you.
Additionally, we curate
PCI Webinars for you, which we offer to
employees of our supporting members institutions for FREE. Folks in our
geographic service area only pay $20, and though, if you are not in our service area, we hope have a local library organization or consortium that sponsors PCI Webinars for you, if you don’t, we still offer you the discounted price of $40.
I love to keep an eye out for
interesting in-person training, as well. Sure, you’ve probably heard of ALA’s Annual Meetings (and we do remind you by listing them!) but have you heard of “The Collective”? It’s a unique and very affordable (it’s only $80) conference in Knoxville, TN that I learned about in a newsletter. (Want to learn more? Check out
their website or this
informative PDF with infographics!)
We also do our best to provide useful categories to you, so that you can sort out what you need as quickly as possible. Using the drop down menu on
SWON’s calendar page, you can check out many categories. Here’s some to try out:
But you don’t have to search if you don’t want to. If you’ve got time to keep an eye on our newsletter, we always feature upcoming events, as well as events you may need to “save the date” for.
Another goal of SWON is to connect our member libraries in useful ways that are mutually beneficial and keep us all from duplicating efforts! So, if you are hosting an event you think your colleagues would like to attend, drop us a line and we’ll be glad to add it to our events calendar.
That is... if I don’t find it first!
