Just for Teen Services: ROYAL and the Return of the TeenSIG

Hi, my name is Deanna and I'm the new CE Coordinator for SWON Libraries. I'm a former YA Librarian and also the brand new convener for the newly re-launched Teen Services Special Interest Group!

I'm writing our Weekly this time around to spread awareness about all the cool things SWON can do for Teen Services staff or any staff that works with teens. First, like I mentioned, we will be rebooting the Teen Services Interest Group (TeenSIG)! This Special Interest Group will meet once quarterly starting on February 16, 2017. We'll talk about new trends in Teen Services, share programming and service ideas, and occasionally we'll have short presentations and discussions on various Teen Service topics.

We don't want to leave anyone out, so this group will meet at different libraries in the region. Our first meeting on February 16, 2017 will take place at the Main Branch of the Boone County Public Library. At this meeting, we will set our agenda for future meetings, share ideas from past and upcoming Summer Reading programs, and more! Please make sure and register for this event, so we know you'll be coming.

Here at SWON, we also want to promote the reading of Young Adult literature and nonfiction for library staff. For that, we have ROYAL, our Reviews of Young Adult Literature special interest groups. We currently have 3 ROYAL groups -- one here in Blue Ash, one in Northern Kentucky, and one in Fairfield -- that meet and review books together.

Publishers send copies of their new titles to SWON, which are the distributed to our ROYAL groups. At each meeting, we share reviews of the last meeting's books. We then get a number of free books to review for the next meeting. (Did I mention the books you get are finished copies... and you get to keep them?)

Each group meets at a different time of day and in a different location in the hopes that we can accommodate as many potential reviewers as possible. And all of this comes at a great price: Employees of our Supporting Member Libraries only need to pay $50 a year to join! Others only pay $100 per year, which is a bargain when you realize you'll get over $1000 worth of books to add to your professional or personal library. (Work in a library with total operating revenue of under $400k a year,
contact us and we can help you out on dues!)

If you find it difficult to come to a ROYAL meeting, but are interested in hosting one of your own, please contact me! Convening a group is easy and looks great on a resume. Not to mention the fun you'll have sharing books with your colleagues. You only need one convener and 2 other confirmed members to begin.

In fact, we recently had a group do just that: if you are in the northern reaches of our service area, you may want to check out the new ROYAL - Troy (OH). Keep an eye on their page for meeting dates.

Anyone is welcome to join any ROYAL group. Just click on the group of your choice, pay your dues, and make sure and register for meetings so we know how many books to provide. Looking forward to seeing you at ROYAL or at TeenSIG, soon!

P.S. -- We're not forgetting about Children's Services. They have their own review group, too. Check out CLEAR today!

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) 2017

Did you know that SWON has a variety of Special Interest Groups (SIGs), besides our poular ROYAL and CLEAR groups that meet in and around Ohio and NKY? And these groups are FREE to join!

Many of our SIGs already have their meeting dates set for 2017! You can find out more about SIGs and what groups are currently active here. Nothing to suit your needs? You can start a SIG any time. Just contact us at info@swonlibraries.org for more information.

See below for the upcoming SIG meetings, and check out our calendar for more dates. Keep an eye out, because there are more meetings to come!

SWON Exclusive - Introduction to Content Marketing with Laura Solomon, MCIW, MLS.

Has your library been promoting itself online through various social media channels (blogs, Facebook, etc.)? Have you seen mixed results? One way to be more effective online is by moving beyond the promotional mindset of traditional marketing and by embracing a different way of creating content that will engage and help serve the needs of your community. Are you ready to make your library’s online efforts more effective? Welcome to content marketing.

We at SWON are happy to be able to offer this exclusive webinar to our Supporting Members for free and to everyone at a low cost!
