Libraries Rock: Musical Programs for Summer Reading... and all year long!

Music and movement are an important part of many children's programs. Aside from just being plain ol' fun, music and movement programs help engage children socially, emotionally, and lend to the development of language and listening skills. Some of us, though, might be wondering: How do I better incorporate music and movement into my programs? Thankfully, SWON has a plan for you!

Our upcoming Summer Reading Workshop will explore the 2018 Collaborative Summer Library Program theme: Libraries Rock! This musical theme will allow our awesome presenters to showcase how to integrate music into your programming. Even if your library does not follow the official CSLP theme, this workshop
will provide you with plenty of programming ideas featuring exciting ways to dance, sing, and play music at your library... for summer and beyond. In addition, if you register by September 30th, we will be giving each registering system a free ukulele! Only one ukulele per library system will be distributed.

Why are we handing out free ukuleles? Alice Beresford of the Monfort Heights branch of PLCH will be teaching us how to play! You will learn how to use simple songs and parodies that anyone can strum in order to enhance storytimes. Alice will also be teaching us how to make simple instruments. Learn how to use recycled items, buckets, and other common items to create music with your kids.

Anyone who needs great ideas and tools to include music, movement and more into their programming is invited to join us at the Dayton Metro Library, Miami Township Branch on September 12th to learn how you can make your library rock!

Play is important, and all children need it!  This lively workshop is both playful and filled with tips on providing playful experiences for the children in our communities. This workshop will provide professional development by building literacy, social and emotional skills through play, exploring the science behind play and its importance in our programs and activities, and practicing multiple ways to include play in story times and circle times.

PCI Webinar - It All Counts: Incorporating Passive Programming into Library Book Displays

SWON is pleased to be able to provide PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price).

Next up: "It All Counts: Incorporating Passive Programming into Library Book Displays." Passive library programming can be anything but passive. How can you increase your passive programming impact and involve more patrons? How can you actively use your physical library as a place of participation, discovery and entertainment? An active willingness to reach out to your patrons on their terms is a great way make a difference in participation in non-traditional library programming.

Using existing library book displays and incorporating additional elements toward passive library programming helps to engage library patrons, promote partnerships with other organizations and creates a culture of connectivity within the library.

Participants in this webinar will learn how to incorporate passive programming into library displays, identify opportunities for incorporating passive programming into existing book displays, and utilize passive programming techniques to engage patrons, increase program attendance, and learn about library users.

SWON Webinar - How Librarians are Ending Youth Homelessness

Youth homelessness is a growing problem in many communities.  Greater Cincinnati is lucky in that there are a number of unique strategies and partnerships addressing youth homelessness.  Libraries are an important part of the solution.  This webinar will help library staff understand youth homelessness in their community and how they can have a direct and immediate impact on the lives of young people experiencing homelessness or housing instability.  Lighthouse Youth and Family Services staff will share what’s happening locally, including a special collaboration with Cincinnati Main Public Library, as well as regional resources for library staff outside of Cincinnati.

Join SWON and Lighthouse Youth and Family Services on August 30th to learn more about this important issue and what you can do to address it. For more on important social issues in the library, you can also register for "Awareness of Human Trafficking in Libraries," a PCI webinar, on August 29th.
