23rd Annual Picture Book Read-In

SWON's Picture Book Read-In is a program for Collection Development staff, Children's Librarians, Teachers, Childcare Workers, in short, anyone who selects and/or reads books for children. We have thousands of recent titles (usually from the last two years) loaned to us for this event from six leading public library systems. Each attendee receives a guide listing all of the books.

The day includes time for selecting and binge-reading picture books, discussing possible story time options with your peers and two presentations.

We Need Diverse Storytimes: How to Find Diverse Children’s Books and Use Them in Your Storytime
Discuss the reasons diverse children’s literature is so important, places we can go to find diverse children’s literature, and our favorite diverse books to use for storytime.

Marissa Clardy received her BA in English from Oberlin College. She received her MLS from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, and now works as a children’s librarian at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. She loves children’s and YA literature, especially fantasy and graphic novels, and diverse books for all ages. She enjoys reading, hiking, running, eating, baking, and (attempting to) cook.

Drag Queen Story Hour
Join us for this presentation about the Drag Queen Story Hour events held at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. We’ll share the history behind the program, which was developed to promote inclusion and diversity, and some tips and tricks for presenting your own DQSH event for children and their caregivers.

Lisa Soper is the Youth Services & Programming Coordinator for The Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County. Prior to her current role, she spent more than 10 years sharing her love of reading, science and technology with children of all ages as a Children’s Librarian with PLCH and the Lawrenceburg Public Library District in Lawrenceburg, IN.
Benjamin Bedel is a Cincinnati native, graduating first from Elder Catholic High School, and later DAAP College at UC. He has been involved with the entertainment, art, and LGBTQ worlds since his college days, but learned rigor and research skills at the conservative high school. From drag parties in LA, to club promotion and collaboration with Queens of all types and expressions in Harlem and Brooklyn, Queer outsider artists have always been in his life. He has been working with Ms. Soper for almost two years, serving as a necessary liaison between talent and the Library, and bringing organization to the Queens’ participation.
