Level-Up Lab:

Working with the Deaf Community 

Chantelle Phillips, from the Newport Branch of the Campbell County Public Library, will share her experiences of programming for the Deaf community over the past three years. Amy Nitschke, a professional interpreter, will provide insight into Deaf culture and communicating with Deaf patrons.

Who should attend?

  • Public desk staff.
  • Programmers for any age group, though examples will mostly cover adults and older adults.
  • Any who are interested in the topic.

Presenter:

Chantelle Phillips, Assistant Director of the Campbell County Public Library system as well as Manager of the Newport Branch, has been in libraries for nearly 20 years and worked in nearly every service area  – from shelving to circulation to storytimes to adult programming to management.

Amy Nitschke
is a professional interpreter, mother of three, and wife to an amazing husband.  She graduated from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College in 2007 with an Associate degree. In 2017 she completed her BA in liberal studies and is currently working on her Master’s Degree. She passed her Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf written exam in 2008 which spurred her on to become nationally certified through this professional organization. In July 2010 she passed her performance piece of her national certification test thus making her a Nationally Certified Interpreter. She has worked in various industries while interpreting including medical, educational, government, and industry sites. Most recently she has become a mentor to young interpreters wanting to become certified. She mentors them through this process by evaluating skill and discussing ethical and situational ideas. Her heart is in teaching and mentoring young interpreters in their professional growth. 

Additionally, Amy is a mother of one amazing son named Elijah,10, and twin daughters Sophia and Stella, 7. In her spare time they spend time at the park or on the family farm feeding chickens and cows. They also have a sweet Border Collie named Clifford. Amy has been married to her husband Jonathan for 14 years. They share in a passion for encouraging and teaching adults and adolescents. 

CEUs:

OLC accepts 2 CEU.

KDLA accepts up to CEU. 

ISL accepts up to 2 LEU/TLEU.

Level-Up Labs:

Level-Up Labs are a chance for you to get some hands-on help to take your tech skills to the next level. They are held either onsite at SWON or at a library near you! Level-Up Labs are always FREE for everyone, but space is limited, so register today to reserve your place!
