Inclusive Technology for Babies to Teens in the Library

An easy-to-understand overview of accessibility software/online programs, (free) adapted book sites, and assistive technology aids (adaptive mice, etc.) for youth of all abilities, including an overview of current apps geared to developing vital skills. Participants will also learn about adaptive technology for babies and toddlers that will make your play programs more inclusive of children with mobile disabilities.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Explore interactive software and online programs that encourage the development of motor, cognitive, social, daily living and vocational skills.
  • Learn about assistive software programs for youth who are blind, have low vision, speech/language disabilities, autism, sensory processing disorder (SPD), dyslexia, ADHD, and English Language Learners (ELL).
  • Gain knowledge of current assistive technology aids and adaptive toys for youth to make services more universally accessible.
  • Discover educational and engaging apps geared to youth working on developing various developmental skills.

Jen has enjoyed being a youth librarian for almost 20 years. She collaborated with special education teachers and therapists to develop the Youth Special Needs Collection at the Bloomfield Township Public Library (btpl.org/youth/special-needs) and adaptive library programs. She has presented on inclusion and accessibility in library services and collection development nationally, including the American Library Association and Michigan Library Association, in addition to developing the biennial Adaptive Umbrella Workshop (a day-long workshop for librarians, teachers, and caregivers working with patrons who have special needs). Jen co-created and serves as chair of the Special Needs Services Roundtable (SNSR) of Michigan librarians providing services for children, teens, and adults with disabilities. She also serves as the programming chair for the Michigan Alliance for Cultural Accessibility (MACA). In 2009, she received the Michigan Library Association Children’s Services Division Award of Merit and was named a Mover & Shaker by Library Journal Magazine in 2016.
