Learn more about the Cincinnati Museum Center History Library & Archives

Since 1831 the Cincinnati History Library & Archives has been collecting and preserving materials related to the Greater Cincinnati area, the state of Ohio and the Old Northwest Territory. Today, it houses one of the most significant regional history collections in the United States with thousands of books, pamphlets, maps, manuscripts, photographs and films. Students, authors, historians and genealogists visit the library most often, but we encourage the general public to take advantage of the collections as well. Our Library staff is always available to help and answer questions.

Ohio Valley History is a journal of the history and culture of the Ohio Valley and Upper South regions published by Cincinnati Museum Center in collaboration the Filson Historical Society and the University of Cincinnati. Published quarterly, each issue contains insightful articles, book reviews and essays for inquisitive minds interested in the history and artifacts of our region. The journal is edited by history professors at the University of Cincinnati and the University of Louisville.

Visit the Library's website to search online databases, including historical issues of Ohio Valley History, and to view collection exhibits.

Information about the Geier Research Center & its collections can be found at

The Geier Collections & Research Center at 760 West Fifth Street is easily recognized by the life-sized family of woolly mammoths at the front of the building. In September 2001, Museum Center consolidated collections storage and research activities into the 70,000 square foot facility on the corner of Gest and W. Fifth Streets. For the first time, all natural history collections and history artifacts were housed in a single museum-quality environment.

Open by appointment or through one of the scheduled tours, the Geier Center houses Museum Center’s archaeology collections, invertebrate and vertebrate fossil collection, all zoology collections, history artifacts and fine arts. The facility includes laboratories for working on paleontology, archaeology and zoology collections, curatorial and registration offices and the Science Library.

This meeting is free, however, parking at the museum center is $5 for those who choose not to carpool
