Does your library have a dedicated early literacy space? Don’t think that you can’t fit one in! Children’s areas in libraries have blossomed in recent years, to incorporate innovative spaces and furnishings for play, exploration, and learning, in libraries from big to small. Learn how the library’s physical space and environment can impact early literacy skill building, and enjoy a showcase of successful library early literacy spaces.

Learning Outcomes

By attending this webinar, participants will:
  • be able to identify characteristics of successful and developmentally appropriate early literacy spaces.
  • understand ways in which space and physical environment can be used to support early literacy skill-building.
  • learn simple ways to transform library space into a print-rich environment.
  • understand and recognize examples of how early literacy spaces encourage the Five Practices (Every Child Ready to Read® @ your library®): reading, writing, singing, talking, and playing.

Who Should Attend

Librarians who serve youth ages 0-5 and their families, youth services managers, branch managers, and library directors. Public librarians working in other areas, library school students who are interested in serving youth, and anyone who works with young children and their families.

Instructors

This webinar will be presented by ALSC's Early Childhood Programs and Services Committee members Janet Ingraham Dwyer, Brooke Newberry, and Sarah Stippich.

Janet Ingraham Dwyer, youth services library consultant at the State Library of Ohio in Columbus, loves that her whole job is to support and assist that creative and mighty tribe: children’s and teen librarians. She partners with the Ohio Library Council on Ohio Ready to Read, a statewide resource network to facilitate early literacy activities in libraries. Janet is devoted to collaboration: separately we are beneficial; together we are transformative.

Brooke Newberry, an early literacy librarian in La Crosse, Wisconsin, is a fan of anything involving little ones under 5. Self appointing herself “The Beyoncé of Babies”, she loves to sing, dance, and play at every storytime and throughout the day as well. She is currently chair of the ALSC Early Childhood Services and Programs Committee. You can find her at Reading With Red (readingwithred.blogspot.com) and on Twitter as @be_newberry.

Sarah Stippich is the Early Literacy Coordinator for the Free Library of Philadelphia. She is a longtime children’s librarian and is a member of the Every Child Ready to Read Oversight Committee and the Early Childhood Programs and Services Committee. She is especially interested in urban library services, creative outreach techniques, and staff empowerment. Her favorite books right now are Kinda Like Brothers by Coe Booth, Relish by Lucy Knisley and, always, Charlie Parker Played Be Bop by Chris Raschka.
