SWON's Picture Book Read-In is a program for Collection Development staff, Children's Librarians, Teachers, Childcare Workers, in short, anyone who selects and/or reads books for children. We have thousands of recent titles (usually from the last two years) loaned to us for this event from six leading public library systems. Each attendee receives a guide listing all of the books.

Lise Tewes has been the Children’s Services Coordinator of the Erlanger Branch of the Kenton County Public Library since 2004.  Beginning in 2005, Lise participated in a multi-library collaboration to celebrate El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros.  Soon after, Lise began presenting bilingual programs at the Erlanger Branch, and collaborated with Kenton County Adult Education ESL Services to provide other cultural events.  Lise was also a founding member of REFORMA Southeast, a local chapter of the REFORMA national organization that has since disbanded.  However, the contacts and collaborations that grew from the REFORMA membership have been very influential in forming Lise’s understanding of the needs of non-English speaking communities.  Lise has an MLS from the University of Kentucky.

Jennifer Beach is a Children’s Programmer at the Erlanger Branch of Kenton County Public Library, where she's been for 28 years. She is a Certified Professional Environmental Educator, and is one of three people in Kentucky to hold the KY Early Care and Education Training (EE Specialty) credential. She has been providing library programs for kids of all ages for nearly 15 years, but has been a STEM nerd her whole life.

Bilingual Storytimes for the Monolingual! Maybe you know that you have a non-English speaking population in your community that needs, and wants, special programs in their home language.  How can you provide these programs when you don’t speak their language?  In this presentation, we’ll discuss what you need to do to create a service plan in order to provide not only bilingual storytimes, but other important library services for your non-English speaking populations.  Successful bilingual programs will be shared, as well as a bibliography of important resources to help you along the way.

Picture This: Engineering Storytime STEM! Most of us have figured out the Science, Technology, and even the Math parts of STEM programming, but what about the Engineering? And what about picture books related to STEM themes? Jennifer will share a few of her favorite STEM picture books then look directly at the E. We’ll share some engineering stories, and then practice hands-on engineering with Keva Planks and other building tools.
