Picture of books in binsA few months ago I had the pleasure of visiting with Martha Bush, Director of the Franklin-Springboro Public Library and her Assistant Director, Vicky Sweeney. They shared with me some of the history of their system, up to the present, busy time. Their summer children’s programs have become so popular that they usually send the craft home in a brown bag with instructions because they don’t have the room for the kids to spread out, even with their good-sized community rooms. That’s what community success looks like! As a result, in the summer they hold big events outside at various locales; parks are popular. And I’m hearing this more and more. If you’re not already collaborating with your park district, now’s the time to get those conversations going.

While we were touring the Franklin Branch, I asked about a collection called “Seedlings.” We were in a section with clear bins with each bin containing slim early reader volumes organized by subject. Martha spoke enthusiastically about how well this collection has been used, it grows every year. It’s close to the door so it’s easy for the parents to dash in and grab an entire handful of titles. Published by Continental Press, it contains a full collection of Early Literacy materials. The Seedling resources include “…over 300 fiction and nonfiction titles span{ing} Reading Recovery levels 1-22 and guided reading levels A-N.”  The parents don’t know what that means, but it doesn’t matter. The materials circulate extremely well and the library is supporting early literacy for those families who might not have the time for a long library visit.

I always enjoyed stories as a child and didn’t develop an interest in non-fiction until much later. But I have nieces and nephews who preferred stories about ‘real’ or ‘true’ things from the time they were very young. The Seedling collection seems an easy way to satisfy those children too.

Thanks Martha and Vicky!
