Find Your Natural Strengths

Are you interested in discovering and honing your natural talents? Maybe you’re also interested in helping others do this?  On 1/23/2018 join SWON and Donald I. Crews, certified StrengthsFinder Strengths Coach, for a Level-Up Lab in which he will help you start your journey to name, claim, and aim your natural talents. This workshop is be a combination of lecture and breakout discussions to help you see ways that you can align your life with your natural talents.

Each person who takes CliftonStrengths’ StrengthsFinder assessment has a distinct combination of thirty-four themes called your personal code — ”the pattern of talents that make you you.” Cracking your code allows you to better understand who you are and how you can succeed by doing what comes naturally to you. During this hour-long online assessment, you see 177 paired statements and choose which best describes you. The assessment measures your natural patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving, so when you're done you'll have discovered your talents.

Each CliftonStrengths theme sorts into one of four domains. These domains describe how people and teams use their talents to work with information, make things happen, influence others and build relationships. StrengthsFinder can help you answer the following questions and accomplish your goals:

  • How do you absorb, think about and analyze information and situations?
  • How do you make things happen?
  • How do you influence others?
  • How do you build and nurture strong relationships?

This assessment can help your team work better together, no matter what industry you’re in. The better we understand our team members and coworkers, the better we can come together to cooperatively create great things. When each person on a team understands and uses their talents and strengths, the team succeeds. According to StrengthsFinder, people working in alignment with their strengths…

  • look forward to going to work
  • have more positive than negative interactions with coworkers
  • treat customers better
  • tell their friends they work for a great company
  • achieve more on a daily basis
  • have more positive, creative, and innovative moments

What’s in it for your library? People who focus on using their strengths are three times more likely to report having an excellent quality of life and are six times as likely to be engaged in their jobs. Teams who focus on strengths have 12.5% greater productivity. So, Join Donald I. Crews, MLIS and Gallup Certified Strengths Coach to start your journey to name, claim and aim your natural talents on January 23rd, 2018 at the SWON offices.

Note*** Unlike most SWON workshops, this one has a prerequisite. Each attendee must have taken the StrengthsFinder assessment. Enrollees will be given an access code for the assessment. The assessment can be taken in less than 45 minutes. If you have already taken the assessment, please let us know so that the code can be used by someone who has not. With the additional expense of providing the assessment, your courtesy in attending is greatly appreciated!

PCI Webinar - Is Your Library Too Fragile?

Could your organization be too fragile? And what could it do differently to grow stronger when things seem like their spinning out of control? Arguably, the whole idea of libraries, particularly public libraries, is inherently one of antifragility. Change, uncertainty, and chaos are conditions organizations usually dislike and try to avoid. Yet, in his book Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder, Nassim Taleb explains antifragility as the concept that certain things grow stronger with shock and turmoil, as opposed to fragile things, which just break down.

In this informative and interactive program Kathy Zappitello and Andrew Sanderbeck will discuss 6 Key Factors in Making Your Organization ‘Antifragile” and Kathy will share the Conneaut Public Library’s specific Antifragile plan being implemented in 2018.

Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for PCI Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today!

Innovation Conversations - What We (don’t) Talk About When We Talk About Diversity

ALAO and SWON Libraries Consortium are partnering on a series of 3-4 webinars a year which are free for SWON or ALAO Members. Coming up is "What We (don’t) Talk About When We Talk About Diversity".

Typically, when we use the word “diversity” we refer to specific categories of identity: race, gender, ability, and sexual orientation, to name a few. As colleges and universities engage in more diversity initiatives, how is the conversation around diversity, equity, and inclusion taking shape? Focusing on race, this session will challenge attendees to unpack, rethink and reframe the diversity conversation.

This presentation was a very popular session at the October 27 ALAO conference, “Libraries Act. Respond. Transform: The ART of Empowerment.” In case you missed the session, the conference or want a refresher, here is another opportunity for you to engage with this important topic.
