Augmented and Virtual Reality in the Library - SWON Tech to Lend

Have you ever been curious about bringing virtual or augmented reality technology into your library? Wondered how you could use it in programming or lend it out to patrons? The library is a great neutral area for people to come together and learn about new immersive technology. Lending VR continues libraries’ tradition of providing open access to technology: similar to what we've done with wifi, art, computing, word processing, databases and books in the past.  According to the American Library Association, access leads to opportunity. Having these new technologies available at libraries and schools gives users the opportunity to experience something they may have never had the chance to otherwise and could spark a passion that lasts a lifetime. VR and AR have many great uses for STEM learning and creation, but are also useful in disciplines like psychology, storytelling, and education

As part of our Tech to Lend program, SWON is able to supply several levels of augmented and virtual reality experience - from basic cardboard VR “goggles” and mobile phone apps to our PS4 gaming system with VR headset. There are hundreds of free apps and videos to use with VR goggles & cardboard viewers and our PS4 comes with several immersive games like Job Simulator, Eagle Flight, and VR Worlds. Our AR kit offers interactive books, coloring pages, and puzzles for kids of all ages - all come with apps to use on your phone or tablet. With more people gaining equal access to these technologies, more apps and games will be developed and there will be more and more uses for AR & VR in libraries and schools!

Want to dip your toe into the pool of AR and VR? Check out our Tech to Lend page to borrow any of our virtual or augmented reality tech!

2018 YALSA Symposium - Call for Proposals

Interested in presenting at the 2018 YALSA Symposium, which takes place in Salt Lake City, UT, November 2-4, 2018? Submit a program or paper proposal by February 1, 2018. The theme of the 2018 symposium is: Zeroing In: Focusing on Teen Needs.

While teen needs often vary from community to community, all teens can benefit from building social and emotional skills that will help them succeed in school, college, careers and life. Libraries can leverage collections, services, programs, community partnerships and more to help teens build skills around self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationships, and social awareness. At this symposium, we will explore how libraries can best support teens’ social and emotional learning to help them effectively navigate a challenging world.

Submit your program or paper proposal by February 1.

Are you a YALSA member? You may be eligible for YALSA’s Young Adult Services Symposium Stipend, which enables two qualified recipients to attend YALSA's annual YA Services Symposium by providing up to a $1,000 travel stipend. Learn more and apply at www.ala.org/yalsa/yasymposium.

2018 KPLA Spring Conference - Call for Proposals

2018 KPLA Spring Conference: Growing Communities Through Helping Hands

This year’s KPLA Spring conference promises to be the best ever, with a theme of “Growing Communities Through Helping Hands” and featuring lots of exciting sessions and a great line-up of speakers (including author Lois Lowry, author James Higdon III, and Southern Poverty Law Center Outreach Director Lecia Brooks). Attendance will be especially high this year, so there is no better opportunity to share your expertise, ideas, and best practices with your fellow library workers from throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In addition to the amazing authors and special speakers lineup, as in recent years past, there will be a dedicated half-day pre-conference workshop for BOTH early literacy and teen services audiences – more details to come early in the new year.

Conference session proposals can be submitted online here. Proposals will only be accepted until January 15, so time is running out!
