3rd Annual Nonfiction Read-In + Graphic Novels - Early Bird Registration Available!

Join us on March 22nd for our annual Nonfiction Read-In! Titles published in 2017 and early 2018 will be available, including nonfiction and graphic novels for PreK through grade 12. Catch up on trends, get recommendations, and learn how you can encourage girls to participate in STEAM activities at your library! SWON's Nonfiction Read-In + Graphic Novels is a yearly program for Collection Development staff, Youth Services Librarians, Children's & Teen services staff, teachers, childcare workers... in short, anyone who selects and/or reads books for children and Young Adults! We have thousands of recent (published around the last two years) titles loaned to us for this event, all from local and leading public library systems. Each attendee will get a listing of every book.

The day includes time for selecting and binge-reading nonfiction books and graphic novels, discussing possible story time options with your peers, and two presentations.

Programs and Presenters:

Standout Non-Fiction and Graphic Novels from 2017: Titles to Book Talk and Share
Designed to engage and enhance readers’ advisory and read aloud repertoires for librarians and teachers, this presentation takes a look at what’s new in nonfiction and graphic novels from preschool through teen literature published in 2017.  Most of these titles have had quiet press, so there will be “gems” to find for everyone.  Additional topics covered include 2018 Youth Media Award winners from genres, favorite publishers/series, and how to design a story program that includes non-fiction especially for school age children.

About the presenter: Lorie Bonapfel is an Outreach Children’s Librarian for the Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County.  She received her MLS from the University of Kentucky and has been a Children’s Librarian since 2000. In her daily duties, she brings her passion about non-fiction to story programs at schools and community groups throughout Hamilton County, makes suggestions for purchase, and processes these materials for her system’s teacher collection program.  She is a CLEAR reviewer for SWON, on the planning team for today’s event, and has also served on committees related to planning Mock Youth Media Awards for the region.

Empowering Girls in STEAM
How do we get the girls to sign up for STEAM programs?  What draws them in?  How can we give them the confidence to fully participate?  We will look at these questions and some of the successful STEAM programs that Monfort Heights Branch has offered the last two summers.

About the presenter: Alice Beresford joined the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County three years ago after ten years as Youth Services Librarian at Mason Public Library in Warren County.  Before that she taught K-8 Music and Drama for twenty years. Her music and drama programs were integrated with math, science and engineering to empower girls (and boys) to learning problem solving in these areas as they developed props for their productions.  She is a Children's Librarian at the Monfort Heights Branch of Cincinnati Library.

SWON Webinar - Helping Patrons find Scholarships for College

Finding accurate, relevant, and up-to-date information on college funding for patrons is an information professional's dream -- or worst nightmare, and it can be difficult for users to tell the difference between helpful information and scholarship scams.

This webinar will:
- Introduce financial aid basics
- Identify local college and financial aid initiatives
- Review the pros and cons of some scholarship guides available in print and online
- Connect users with organizations, scholarships, and initiatives specific to Kentucky and Ohio

About the speaker: Amy Estersohn is a former college admissions officer and college admissions consultant.  She has given presentations to organizations ranging from the New York State Association of College Admissions Counselors to librarians at YALSA's 2017 Symposium.  Her passion is working with librarians and libraries to support, streamline, and demystify college admissions and financial aid information.

Teen Reading Challenge 2018: February 1st - March 31st

#trc2018 is happening now!

As one of our most popular events, the Teen Reading Challenge encourages librarians and library staff to read materials for teens! Teams compete to see who has the best average of pages read during February and March. The top three teams will receive lovely prizes!

How does it work? First, you create a team of no less than three people. You may recruit co-workers, colleagues from other libraries, and even teens from your advisory groups, book clubs, or students in your school. Once you've formed a team, contact SWON with your team name and the number of members joining you. Once you've registered your team, you will receive a LibraryThing account to share with your teammates. From there, you and your team will log books as the challenge progresses. Whether it's YA, graphic novel, or an adult novel that has teen appeal - anything that you would hand to a teen to read counts for this challenge!

The earlier you register, the sooner you can prepare for the challenge and receive your group LibraryThing account. If you haven't arlready, we encourage you to create your teams as soon as possible! The hard deadline to form and register teams is February 16thOn February 1st, the challenge began! This means that you can log books read from February 1st on, even if your team is just now signing up.

In April, SWON will announce winners and hand out prizes. Prizes this year include a Kano Pixel Kit, Google Cardboard compatible goggles, and a paper circuits kit! Not to mention the bragging rights that come with winning. Even if you aren't interested in winning, the Teen Reading Challenge is a great way to introduce staff members to the wonderful world of YA  and improve your reader's advisory.

More details and in-depth rules are located on this page: Reach out to us if you have any questions or you can send an inquiry to the SWON Infobox ( We look forward to hearing from you. Good luck!
