Library 2.018 - Design Thinking: How Librarians Are Incorporating It Into Their Practice

We're excited to spread the word about the first Library 2.018 mini-conference: Design Thinking: How Librarians Are Incorporating It Into Their Practice, which will be held online (and for free) on Thursday, March 8th. This event is being organized in partnership with Steven J. Bell, who will serve as moderator for the opening panel and as the closing keynote speaker.

When IDEO, a globally recognized design firm, partnered with the Chicago Public Library to create the Design Thinking Toolkit for Libraries it demystified the design thinking process and gave the library community a resource to implement a design challenge in their own organization. Design thinking is a process designers use to thoughtfully identify problems and then, using a team-based approach, develop prototypes useful for implementing an elegant solution. In response to the growing interest in design thinking, this event will provide attendees with insights into the process and examples of how librarians are integrating it into their practice. If you’ve been hearing about design thinking and want to learn more about how you can develop and lead a design challenge at your library, this is your opportunity.

All library professionals, employers, LIS students, and educators are invited to provide input and participate in this event. Participants are encouraged to use #library2018 and #librarydesignthinking on their social media posts leading up to and during the event.  Please register as a member of the Library 2.0 network to be kept informed of future events. Recordings from previous years are available under the Archives tab at Library 2.0 and at the Library 2.0 YouTube channel.

The School of Information at San José State University is the founding conference sponsor.

This is a free event, being held online. Not a SWON Event.

SWON Tech to Lend Update: Tech for Learning Circuits

As SWON's new Emergent Trends & Technology Educator, I am happy to debut a few more of our new Tech to Lend items and associated resources. We now offer several toys to help children and adults alike learn about circuits - how they work, and how to work with them!

Snap Circuits
This kit makes learning electronics easy and fun! Follow the pictures in the manual and build exciting projects such as FM radios, digital voice recorders, AM radios, burglar alarms, doorbells, and much more! You can even play electronic games with your friends. All parts are mounted on plastic modules and snap together with ease. Enjoy hours of educational fun while learning about electronics. No tools required.

This Tech to Lend kit contains two Snap Circuits kits, the Extreme Version and the Lights Electronic Discovery Kit. The Extreme Version contains over 80 color-coded, real circuit components that snap together to create working electronic circuits and devices and builds over 750 projects. The Lights kit contains over 55 additional components and 175 projects. The kit includes snap wires, color changing LED, glow-in-the-dark propeller, infrared receiver, strobe IC and much, much more. All pieces snap together easily on the included plastic grids -- no soldering required. Each piece is numbered and color-coded to make identifying them easy. These components combine to create working circuit boards just like the ones found inside televisions, radios, and other electronic devices. Because the projects are arranged in order of complexity, users can build on their skills as they progress through the numbered manuals. The lessons start out simple and get more complicated over the course of the manuals.

Physical manuals are included in the kit and digital versions (as well as other resources) are available on our Google Drive here

MaKey MaKey
An invention kit for the 21st century! With these kits, users can turn everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the internet. It's a simple invention kit for everyone from beginners to experts doing art, engineering, and everything in between! Our kit includes: four (4) MaKey MaKeys with alligator clips & USB, as well as accessories like coins, sticky notes, batteries, lights, Play Doh, tape, paper clips, tooth picks, foil, and more! Check out our Google Drive for links, projects, and lesson ideas.

Squishy Circuits Kit
Squishy Circuits use conductive and insulating play dough to teach the basics of electrical circuits in a fun, hands-on way. There’s no need for breadboards or soldering – just add batteries and pre-made doughs (or make your own dough with the provided recipes). Let your creations come to life as you light them up with LEDs, make noises with buzzers, and spin with the motor. Squishy Circuits are very simple and are based on two play doughs – one that is conductive (electricity flows through it) and one that is insulative (does not allow electricity to flow through it). Power is supplied by a 4AA battery pack and travels through the conductive dough to provide power to LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes), buzzers, or motors. SWON provides batteries in the kit. See our Google Drive for Squishy Circuit resources
