SWON Webinar - Meeting a need: “Less Stress” resources to share

Do you see students, families, and colleagues who are feeling overly stressed? What about yourself?

Linda Straube and library staff at New Trier High School have worked with departments across the school to gather and share resources that help reduce stress.  In this webinar, learn about their innovative and collaborative efforts (with Social Work, Health Services, and Kinetic Wellness) to gather and publicize resources about reducing stress and becoming more mindful. A concerted use of technology facilitated access for students and faculty on their mobile devices and encouraged personal learning in various styles - reading, viewing/listening, and actively experimenting with breathing exercises (we will include a short demonstration). This SWON presentation will note other activities (hosting therapy dogs, setting up craft and coloring stations) and will showcase a Libguide giving all participants access to the many videos, apps and online articles that we have recommended to students, faculty and parents. Please join us and take some deep breaths!

Linda Straube has almost 20 years of experience in K-12 libraries. She currently teaches at New Trier High School, a large high school (4000+ students) in suburban Chicago. There, she is energized by collaborating across numerous disciplines and providing professional development (most recently regarding misinformation and “fake news”).  Linda has also taught a graduate course on School Library Management at Illinois State and facilitated an all day workshop on eBooks and eReaders for school librarians at the University of Illinois (UIUC). Linda enthusiastically promotes reading (studies show it reduces stress!) and works closely with public library colleagues. Her own graduate degrees include a Masters in Library and Information Sciences from UIUC and a Masters in Management from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University.

Northern Kentucky University’s W. Frank Steely Library is hosting a free workshop on March 6th, 2018. “Exploring Energy, Environment, and Space: Resources for the P-12 Educator” will take place at 4pm in room 102 of the Steely Library. This workshop will explore free resources available from government and non-profit organizations like NASA, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It also can provide a boost for educators to use these resources in their preschool to Twelfth grade classrooms.

“This workshop serves as an opportunity for educators to see what free resources they have available. Many people do not know how much we have available,” said John Schlipp, associate professor and Intellectual Property Librarian at Steely. Sessions include the following:

The Power of Deliberation in the Classroom - Bill Muse

This discussion focuses on classroom teachers as one of the keys to educating young people about the kind of deliberation that will help them solve problems in their lives related to energy and environmental issues.

William Muse is former president of the National Issues Forums Institute (NIFI), a non-profit nonpartisan network that, in partnership with the Kettering Foundation, publishes issue guides on major problems facing the nation and works with groups to conduct deliberative forums around the country.
