Stress Less, Read More

Are you a school or children's/teen services librarian who has students and patrons who are overly stressed? What about you, yourself? Stress occurs when you perceive that demands placed on you — such as work, school or relationships — exceed your ability to cope. With too much stress in your life or workplace and no way to manage it, you can become a victim of burnout without even knowing. So how do you deal with it? What strategies can help you avoid burnout?

Linda Straube, librarian and teacher, has dealt with that stress herself, so she set out to find some solutions. Linda and library staff at New Trier High School in Chicago worked with departments across their school to gather and share resources that help reduce stress for librarians, teachers, and students alike.  In a March 1st webinar, Linda will share resources for reducing stress and becoming more mindful as well information on how her school facilitated access to these resources for students and faculty. This SWON presentation will include breathing and mindfulness techniques as well as notes on other stress-relieving activities like hosting therapy dogs and setting up craft/coloring stations. Linda will showcase a Libguide giving all participants access to the many videos, apps and online articles that she recommendeds to students, faculty and parents. Please join us and take some deep breaths!

Along with deep breathing exercises, minfulness, therapy dogs, and coloring, studies show that reading can also be a huge stress reliever. If you're looking to have some stress-reducing collection development fun with other youth and school librarians, join us for our 3rd Annual Nonfiction Read-In + Graphic Novels - school media specialists can register here for a steep discount (how relaxing!).  If you register before Feb 28th you'll be eligible for the Early Bird Special discount as well, regardless of where you work. Enjoy the benefits of reading while working on your youth collection and reader's advisory expertise!

Begin the month of March learning how to destress with Linda Straube; then join us for the Nonfiction Read-In to catch up on great youth nonfiction and graphic novels from last year and this year!

PCI Webinar - What’s To Come in 2018? Assessing and Staying On Top of Adult Leisure Reading and Collection Development Trends

For library workers who assist leisure readers, whether it is from the front desk, the reference desk, or as you roam the stacks, staying on top of the latest trends is imperative. Our patrons expect us to know what’s hot before they do. They expect us to have the items ready and waiting for them as soon as they request them. And with all of the other job duties we have to worry about, sometimes we are not as responsive to the most current trends as we could be. But assessing trends in leisure reading and collection development is an essential job duty, and it is not nearly as difficult as you may think.

Join noted Readers’ Advisory expert Becky Spratford for a webinar that will be fun and useful. She will walk you through the current trends in adult leisure collections and teach you the tips and tricks you can use to stay in the know all year long. Before you know it, your library will be trending in your community.

In this interactive and informative program you will:
• Learn how to stay on top of trends all year long
• Learn how to keep your collection as responsive as possible to your patrons’ tastes as possible
• Learn how to make the library visit more participatory for your adult patrons

Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for PCI Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today!

TrainingMag Webinar - What Castomers™ Want: A Disney-Inspired Approach To Employee Care

The Disney philosophy doesn’t start with customers. It starts with "castomers™". The formula is simple. A great castomer™ experience leads to a great customer experience.  Castomer™ care involves four elements summarized in the acronym TEAM.

Teach – Develop employees so they can reach their full potential
Engage – Involve employees in decisions that affect them
Appreciate – Acknowledge and thank employees for their efforts
Manage – Provide employees with the tools and assistance they need

In this session drawn from his book Care Like a Mouse: The Key to Disney Quality Service (Theme Park Press, January 2018), Lenn Millbower, The Mouse Man™ shares Disney inspired TEAM techniques for meeting your castomer™ needs.

Topics covered will include:

The arc of the castomer™ training experience
Processes Disney uses to involve castomers in decisions
Recognition, rewards and perks that honor castomer™ effort
The Disney expectation of its managers

Lenn Millbower, the Mouse Man™ and author of the just published Care Like a Mouse: The Key to Delivering Disney Quality Service, teaches Walt Disney inspired customer service, leadership and presentation skills methods. Lenn saw those methods up close. He spent 25 years at Walt Disney World, starting in Epcot Operations, stage managing at Disney-MGM Studios, opening Disney's Animal Kingdom, writing training for Disney University and Disney Institute and leading training at Walt Disney Entertainment. He will inspire you to create your own magic. Give it a shake and watch that magic will take!
