What's Mickey Mouse got to do with it?

Despite some recent snow showers, the calendar assures me that spring is, indeed, upon us. And we all know what that means; flowers bloom, zoo babies are born and SWON holds its Spring Membership Meeting.

And this year the Mouse will be in the house. Together we’ll figure out how customer service works in the land of tomorrow, as Shawn Fry & Amanda Hopper, Assistant Directors at Boone County Public Library (KY) answer the question: “What do libraries have to learn from Disney?” (Besides that having costumed “Elsa & Anna” characters can really reel them in.)

In their presentation “Quality Service: From Disney to Libraries” they’ll share what they’ve learned from their Disney Institute training on quality service. Learn how to take your library to the next level in customer service with Disney-style service that empowers employees and sets high levels of service expectations.

You’ll also hear a little from Shawn Fry on the subject of SWON, since he is SWON Libraries’ current board president, and then a little more from me, Cassondra Vick, about what SWON has done, is planning and can do for you. We’ve had a pretty exciting year, and we’ll also be looking at new board members as well as new plans for SWON. So if it has been awhile, now might be a good time to revisit the Membership Meeting.

The coolest part, however, may be the location. We’ll be meeting in the Kenton County Public Library’s new STREAM Center auditorium space, the Bronte Room. While this state-of-the-art meeting room may be a sight to see, we’ll also have a guided tour of the STREAM Center itself. You won’t believe all the technology and tools Erlanger has in this new makerspace.

Not a SWON Supporting Member? The Membership Meeting is open to all! We value the input from our Geographic Members and all other area libraries as well. Nothing helps us to better serve you than meeting with you, talking with you and sharing what we can do for each other.

So please register today for our Spring Membership Meeting in Erlanger, KY on May 24th. Deanna, Emily and I look forward to seeing you there!

Teen Reading Challenge: Winners and Correction

The Teen Reading Challenge is over. It ended on April 1st when we told our 200 participants to close their books! 20 teams came together and read a total of 3,846 books. Together they read 1,027,653 pages over the course of 2 months. That is no small feat!

Earlier this month, the team captains were updated with their Team Challenge Standings and we announced the winners to them. However, since then, an error in the count was made known to us. After a recount, the top three teams remain the same, but their positions have shifted.

The winners this year are determined by the average number of pages read by all members of the team. Now without further ado... the winners of the Teen Reading Challenge!

  • In third place is GetIt2gether. They read an average of 9,409 pages per person.
  • In second place is Reading Rainbow$. They read an average of 12,075 pages per person.
  • In first place is Brontësaurus! They managed to read 12,454 pages on average per person!

Thank you to all the teams for competing this year! If you would like to see how each individual team did, check out the Team Challenge Standings! The blue column contains the number that is used to determine the winners. I hope to see you all at the next Teen Reading Challenge!

Level-Up Lab: Intro to Genealogy with Ancestry Library Edition

Join Amy Volz at the Miami Township branch of Clermont County Pulblic Library on May 7th to learn how to effectively navigate Ancestry Library Edition and discover the history hiding in your family tree! Learn tips and tricks such as how to incorporate wild cards into your searches to return more results. Discover ways to use additional resources to build a family tree and find additional information on your family. We will discuss ways to use Ancestry in library programming and talk about potential issues that may arise. There will be time for hands-on use of Ancestry Library Edition. Please come prepared with some information about your family or a family you would like to research. Good starting information would be grandparents names, birth dates, and places of birth (or estimates if not known).

Amy Volz is currently the Technical Services Librarian for the Wilmington Public Library. A native of Seattle, Amy moved to Ohio about 10 years ago. She began working at WPL in 2012 as a circulation associate, and has done a little bit of everything since. She earned her MLIS in December of 2015 from Kent State University. When not at work, Amy enjoys cooking, reading (of course), and working in the garden.

Level-Up Labs are a chance for you to get some hands-on help to take your tech skills to the next level. They are held either onsite at SWON or at a library near you! Level-Up Labs are always FREE for everyone, but space is limited, so register today to reserve your place!
