The Opioid Epidemic - Resources for Library Staff

There is no doubt that you are aware of the opioid epidemic in America - over two million Americans are currently dependent on or abusing a variety of opioids, including prescription pain killers and street drugs like heroin. On average, over 115 Americans die each day from opioid overdose. All over the country, library staff & boards have noticed a rise in abuse and overdoses in library facilities. Schools are noticing that their students are suffering due to the addictions of their parents. There are many causes behind the epidemic, but the fact is that it effects each of our communities, workplaces, schools, and even our own homes and families. What can we do to help support our communities during this trying time?

As someone working at a library (no matter what kind) you may end up in a position where you encounter a patron or student who is addicted themselves or effected by a loved one's addiction. If a person isn't actively overdosing (in which case, your library may carry and train its employees in Naloxone, also known as Narcan) there are a lot of resources that you can share with the individual (or the individual's family) to get them the help they need before an overdose tragedy occurs. The Department of Health and Human Services offers an opioid webpage, including a tool to help users find opioid treatment programs. These programs can seem cost prohibitive, but there are ways to get public assistance for addiction treatment and recovery. There is also a national helpline available for those dealing with these issues which is open 24/7. In Ohio, there are programs like Project DAWN and Start Talking! which serve various purposes in the fight against this epidemic - project DAWN uses Naloxone to actively save those overdosing and Start Talking hopes to prevent future addictions by starting the conversation about drugs and addiction early on.

Libraries and library organizations are actively engaging with this issue - in autumn 2017, PLA and WebJunction joined to host a virtual town hall on the crisis; panelists discussed what their own local efforts look like, as well as what they are doing to collaborate with others in the community. This spring, OLC offered an Opioid Symposium which provided input from the Ohio Attorney Generals Office, law enforcement, first responders, lawyers, and public health specialists.  This coming August, Ohio's regional library systems (SWON, SERLS, NEO, and NORWELD) are hosting a multi-day Libraries in Response event that will take place in various cities across the state. This event will host speakers, including Sam Quinones, author of DREAMLAND: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic and a panel discussion about ways to address the crisis in libraries. As well as these events, a slew of webinars have become available for those who would like to learn more about the crisis and what they can do, including one from PCI coming up in JuneThis crisis has been building for decades and there are no easy answers. Libraries may not be able to solve the issue, but we can engage with it and help in the way we do best - providing resources, information, and support to individuals and families in our communities who need it.
