Roll for Initiative! D&D in the Library?

In the past, when I heard the word "gaming" I imagined people playing video or computer games, something that I never really did. In the last few years, however, my definition has changed. Now, when I think of "gaming" it's usually in the context of having friends or family over for a game night at which we play board games like Carcassone, Photosynthesis, Pandemic, or even roleplaying games like Pathfinder or D&D. It's not just my friends, either: analog/tabletop gaming is more popular than ever, even in our high-tech world. Across the globe, tabletop gaming bars and cafes are opening and florishing. Pen and paper games, Dungeons & Dragons especially, have made a huge resurgence in popular culture. This trend can be attributed to many things: Gen X and Millenial nostalgia (and shows like Stranger Things), the triumph of "nerd culture," or the need to get away from screens for a while and socialize face-to-face.

As librarians, we know that not everyone has equal access to the resources and information needed to experience something like tabletop gaming, be it because of money, space, or time. In fact, many libraries are already circulating board games and D&D guides for patrons to borrow.  On January 10th, join us at SWON for a Level-Up Lab designed to help you learn all about Dungeons & Dragons and how you can bring it to your library. For the first hour, you'll hear about the history of the game, the skills it imparts to its players, and how you can run a D&D program at your very own library. In the second hour, you will get to play D&D to get a feel for the game and see the mechanics of what makes it work. Don't be shy if you have never seen D&D before, all levels of experience are welcome at this lab! Space is limited! Register now to reserve your spot!

Mock Printz - January 8, 2019

Reading the best of the best, the official Printz committee announces books they finds outstanding every year at ALA Midwinter. In that same vein, the Mock Printz committee is creating a list of top contenders from every month. At this meeting, the Mock Printz committee will present their chosen best books and open discussion on each book. At the end of the meeting, a vote will be held to determine the Mock Printz honors as well as the finalist.

If you would like to follow along with the committee's reading, please check out the Mock Printz group page! You will find blog posts that list top contenders every month that may be taken into consideration for the Mock Printz.

SWON Webinar - Is Your Library's Website an Obstacle Course?

Library websites can be prone to a number of issues that frustrate their users. Many sites use outdated conventions, anecdotal “data” or fail to use standard practices, resulting in poor experiences for patrons, and a loss of credibility for the library as a community institution. In this webinar, learn about common problems found on today’s library websites, backed by current research, from a web designer/developer who has been working with library websites for more than two decades.

Laura Solomon, MCIW, MLS is the Library Services Manager for the Ohio Public Library Information Network. She has been doing web development and design for twenty years, in both public libraries and as an independent consultant. She specializes in developing with Drupal. She is a 2010 Library Journal Mover & Shaker. She's written three books about social media and content marketing, specifically for libraries, and speaks nationally on both these and technology-related topics. As a former children's librarian, she enjoys bringing the "fun of technology" to audiences and in giving libraries the tools they need to better serve the virtual customer.
