Ready to Read YA? The Teen Read challenge starts in February!

Need an excuse to read YA? Want to show off your reading skills? The Teen Reading Challenge is for you! As one of our most popular events, the Teen Reading Challenge encourages librarians and library staff to read materials for teens. What is the Teen Reading Challenge? Teams compete to see who has the best average of pages read during February and March! The top three teams will receive lovely prizes!

Want to join? First, you need to create a team of at least three people including yourself! Second, decide who the team captain will be for they are responsible for forwarding information about the challenge to their teammates. Finally, read! Any YA books or books with teen appeal will be logged using a team LibraryThing account. Only books read between February 1st and March 31st can count for this challenge.

The earlier you register, the sooner you can prepare for the challenge and receive your group LibraryThing account. We encourage you to create your teams as soon as possible. The deadline to form and register teams is January 25th

More details and in-depth rules are located on this page: Reach out to us if you have any questions or you can send a general inquiry to the SWON Infobox ( I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck!

2018 Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Awards Winners Announced

The Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Award Council is pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 BuckeyeChildren’s and Teen Book Awards:

Grades K–2: Dance! Dance! Underpants! (Ballet Cat) by Bob Shea (Disney-Hyperion, 2016) 978-1484713792
Grades 3-5: Mustaches for Maddie by Chad Morris and Shelly Brown (Shadow Mountain, 2017) 978-1629723303
Grades 6-8: Refugee by Alan Gratz (Scholastic Press, 2017) 978-0545880831
Teen: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (Balzer + Bray, 2017) 978-0062498533

Each of these books won the highest number of votes out of the five nominees in its category, in an online voting process by young readers all across the state of Ohio. Nominations for the 2018 Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Awards were accepted from March 15, 2017 to March 10, 2018.  To be eligible for nomination, a book must have been published in the United States in the previous two years, and not be part of a series that has previously won the award.  Voting was held between September 1, 2018 and November 10, 2018. The Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Award Council thanks our partner, the leading website for book reviews by-and-for kids, for hosting the BCTBA voting through an engaging interface for Ohio students, by which they were able to learn about the nominated books, share their reviews, and vote for their favorites. Together our organizations will continue to promote the love of reading among Ohio’s children and teens.

The Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Award program is designed to encourage children in Ohio to read literature critically, to promote teacher and librarian involvement in children's literature programs, and to commend authors of such literature. It was established in 1981 through a collaborative effort of the Ohio Council of the International Reading Association, The Ohio Educational Library Media Association, The Ohio Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts, The Ohio Library Council, and The State Library of Ohio. It is one of the few statewide readers’ choice awards in which students nominate titles as well as vote for the winners.

A copy of each of the winning books with the BCTBA seal will be added to the BCTBA archives, housed at the Kent State University School of Library and Information Sciences Reinberger Children’s Center in Kent, Ohio.

Visit the BCTBA website: for further information on the voting process and to find past winners and nominees, extension ideas, author information, Common Core connections, and other literary links.  If you have any questions, please contact the BCTBA Council President here
