Crafting Your Elevator Speech

When was the last time you found yourself with an opportunity to share the successes and challenges of your library with a potential benefactor or collaborator? In these situations, we frequently have a limited amount of time. Are you prepared to tell your story in 2 minutes or less? In business circles it’s called an “elevator speech,” but it’s actually more of an introduction intended to pique someone’s interest to learn more. Our brains remember stories. An elevator speech is a short story. What is your story… in 2 minutes or less?

Join us on April 26th at Xavier University's McDonald Memorial Library for a SWON Level-Up Lab on elevator speeches.

Upon completion of this lab, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate your idea to stakeholders
  • Explain the benefits of your idea
  • Express your idea in a succinct 2 minute message

Level-Up Labs are a chance for you to get some hands-on help to take your skills to the next level. They are held either onsite at SWON or at a library near you! Level-Up Labs are always FREE for everyone, but space is limited, so register today to reserve your place

Want to present your own Level-Up Lab at your library? Contact us by e-mail or phone (513-751-4422) to pitch your idea!

Spring Summer Reading Program Workshop 2019 - A Universe of Stories

Join us on March 14th for this energetic and STEM-filled workshop on this year's 2019 Summer Reading theme "A Universe of Stories!"

Presentations & Speakers:

Armstrong Air & Space Museum Presentation

The Armstrong Air & Space Museum will present their recommended 2019 Summer Reading Library Programs, including details on “Black Holes” and “Living on Another World.” With the 2019 Summer Reading Library theme being “A Universe of Stories,” the museum is opening up all newly launched outreach programs and workshops to your library. They will provide information and answer questions about the nine available programs—find out how they can best fit with your Summer Reading participants!

STEM @ Your Library

Using techniques learned through the NASA@ My Library grant, we will discuss inexpensive ways to incorporate STEM into children’s and teen programming. Some topics include space, engineering, weather and exploring the moon. We will also offer suggestions on where to find free resources for STEM training and activities.

Kate Denier is the Senior Branch Manager for the North Central Branch of The Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County. She has over ten years of experience in youth services and is currently on the Board of Directors for YALSA.

Marni Blanken is the Children’s Librarian at the Northside Branch of The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. She has been a Children’s Librarian for 15 years and served on various committees. Kate and Marni love science programming and are the facilitators of the NASA @ My Library grant for The Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County.

SWON in Space

In this presentation, SWON's Emergent Trends & Technology Educator, Emily Wages, will show you all the spacey ways you can make use of our TTL program next summer!  You will get to see and try out several of our space-related technology items: from simple toys such as the Cubetto and augmented reality books to more complicated projects like the LittleBits Space Kit which comes with ten activities created in collaboration with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. We will explore resources for free VR and AR materials like 360 videos, images, tours, and apps. A few days before the workshop, you will receive a list of QR codes for apps to download if you'd like to follow along with Emily's presentation.

Emily Wages was born and raised in southwestern Ohio, growing up in Forest Park and Fairfield. She attended Miami University for her BS in Education and earned her MLIS at Kent State University. She has worked with adults, teens, and children in libraries for five years. Most recently, her work as a library programming specialist concentrated on creating and presenting programs on a variety of topics including basic to advanced technology, maker projects, and community health and wellness. She has a passion for teaching library skills and information literacy as well as advocating for access to information for all.

Exploring Space through Local Libraries

This presentation will explore different ways you can explore space at your library. Additionally, the presenters will also share the Science-Technology Activities & Resources Net (STAR_Net), which is a production of the Space Science Institute & National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) in collaboration with the American Library Association, the Lunar and Planetary
Institute, and the Afterschool Alliance. Finally, the presenters will detail how the Wright Library in Oakwood has offered space-related programming by utilizing these resources.

Kurtz Miller is a science teacher at Wayne High School in Huber Heights, Ohio.
Robyn Case is an Adult Services Librarian at Wright Memorial Public Library in Oakwood, Ohio. She previously served for 6 years as Library Media Specialist for K-12 students at The Miami Valley School. She holds a BA from Ohio Wesleyan University, an MLIS from Kent State University, and is a recent “graduate” of Library Leadership Ohio.
