Nonfiction Read-In + Graphic Novels is a program for Collection Development staff, Youth Services Librarians, Children's and Teen services staff, teachers, childcare workers... in short, anyone who selects and/or reads books for children and Young Adults. We have thousands of recent (published around the last two years) titles loaned to us for this event, all from local and leading public library systems. Each attendee will get a listing of all of the books.

The day includes time for selecting and binge-reading nonfiction books and graphic novels, discussing possible story time options with your peers and two presentations.

Programs and Presenters:

Nonfiction in Storytime – it’s not just a Fairytale!
Nonfiction books have gotten much more readable in the last few years, many are no longer just written for reports or information gathering but are written for fun reading and sharing. Amy Buskey will present titles that are great for Storytimes, school outreach, and even booktalks for teens and adults.

Amy Buskey received her BA in Anthropology with a minor in Geology from the University of Cincinnati and her MLS from the University of Kentucky. She has worked for Clermont County Public Library for over 20 years – first as a Youth Services Specialist and currently as a Branch Manager. She visits six preschools and schools a month and does storytimes in her branch as well. Her father taught Earth Science and shared his love and excitement for discovery in the natural world with her. She is an avid reader of nonfiction and loves to hike, camp, visit National Parks, and bake in her free time.

The Feminist Nature of Graphic Novels
This presentation will discuss the ways in which the graphic novel medium has become one of the most progressive and inclusive forms of literature. From providing visual representation of diversity, to promoting literacy through non-traditional methods, the graphic novel has become a feminist tool that every librarian should feel comfortable employing! This panel will conclude with a brief RA segment with go-to titles to recommend to your patrons or to the person who orders books for your library’s collection.

Brea McQueen is a Teen Librarian at The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Her educational background includes a BA in English Literature and a BA in Women’s Studies from Miami University and a MLIS from Kent State University. In her free time she enjoys devouring graphic novels and plotting the destruction of the patriarchy.
