Welcome SWON's New Director!

SWON Staff and board would like to welcome Gayle Ecabert as our new Director!

Gayle comes to us with a long and diversified education and professional history. Originally graduating college with a BA in History, she taught middle school social studies for several years. Eventually, she made the decision to attend University of Cincinnati School of Law, received her JD, and thereafter practised business law for a number of years. She left the law field and ran two successful small family businesses until she attended Kent State University for her MLIS and became Director of Library Services at Beckfield College in Florence, KY in 2015, where she was working when SWON decided to make her our new director this year.

Gayle's mix of knowledge, experience, and business expertise will help SWON to continue serving our patrons (YOU) with the highest quality educational offerings. We are looking forward to working together to serve our library community the best we can.

SWON Webinar: Fortnite in the Library

Looking for ways to bring popular programming to your tween patrons? Fortnite IRL (in real life) is a great way to bring youth into the library. The program, like the video game, is built around hidden objects that are designed to aid your players in being the last one standing. On August 20th, Emporia Public Library will share tips and details on how to take this popular video game off the screen and into your library!

Presenter Tiffany Fay is in her fourth year as the Young Adult Services Librarian at Emporia Public Library. When she’s not developing programs or creating circulation statistic spreadsheets she can be found loving her mom life and gardening.

PCI Webinar - Beginning Genealogy: Free Resources

Where do we come from? Researching our family history is becoming more popular with subscription services such as Ancestry.com and 23andMe ancestry kits. But what if we don’t want to spend a fortune answering this question? How can we find our ancestors without costly subscriptions? How can I confirm that my ancestors were from (insert country) or that the stories my great aunt tells are true?

Knowing about free genealogy resources, both digital and physical, is one way to get started researching your genealogy. We all have a history and lack of funds should not be a barrier.

Familiarize yourself with free websites and databases as well as local resources so that you can research your own history, help a patron research, or conduct a class on genealogy.

At the conclusion of webinar, participants will be able to:

Generate a list of geographic specific resources
Locate hidden resources buried in databases
Interpret Census records
Evaluate digital resources
Record your research

Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for PCI Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today
