Fortnite IRL

Fortnite is an incredibly popular video game series set in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested world.  Over 50% of all Nintendo Switch owners (22 million total) have downloaded Fortnite and as of August 2018, there were at least 78.3 million active Fortnite players. Though there are several distinct games in the series, Fortnite Battle Royle is the most popular game with people of all ages - especially youth. In Battle Royle, players fight against enemies and each other to be the last player standing.

What does this have to do with libraries, though?

As community centers, libraries can use programming themed around popular video games like Fortnite to help increase youth (and parent) participation in the library. A few years back when Pokemon Go premiered to great popularity, many libraries took advantage of the trend and hosted Pokemon Go parties and programs. In a similar way, Tiffany Fay of Emporia Public Library has recently created and hosted a successful Fortnite related program which she calls "Fortnite IRL." With the participation of youth and their parents, Tiffany used library space, cardboard, landyards, and beanbags to create her own real life version of the Battle Royale game.

Tiffany herself will be leading a SWON webinar on the topic of DIYing your own Fortnite IRL game on August 20th, so join us to learn all about it! Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for SWON Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides our webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today!

IDEAL 2019

Do you believe that diversity and inclusion are essential to personal and organizational excellence in the library and archives professions?

Are you doing groundbreaking research on diversity and inclusion-related topics and want to share it with your colleagues on an international platform?

Mark your calendar for IDEAL ‘19 to be held August 6-7, 2019, on the Ohio State University campus in Columbus, Ohio. A call for presentations, posters, and scholarships will follow in February 2019.

IDEAL, formerly the National Diversity in Libraries Conference, aims to foster awareness and appreciation of workplace diversity issues through the exploration of exemplary practice, contemporary theory, thought leadership, and strategy development for all those in the academic and public library, archives, and museum sectors.

IDEAL ‘19  will provide an opportunity for professionals at every level and across sectors to discuss how increasing workplace diversity and creating an inclusive workplace environment improves organizational effectiveness, creativity, adaptability, and relevance to the communities served by the organization.

As a result of participating in IDEAL ‘19, attendees will be able to:

  • Articulate the value of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in academic and public libraries and archives
  • Develop a robust strategy for workplace diversity and inclusion that aligns with organizational or community missions
  • Explore strategies for creating globally inclusive and culturally competent professions
  • See inclusion as a gateway to organizational excellence, social responsibility, and community engagement
  • Contribute to conversations about measuring the effectiveness of efforts to create inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible workplaces and communities

Developing An Outreach Program for Your Library

You have been assigned the task of creating an outreach plan for your library. Whether you have been in your position for a period of time or you are brand new to your library, this can be a momentous task. Where do you begin? How can you have the greatest impact?

In this interactive and informative program, we’ll discuss step by step suggestions and look at usual resources to guide you towards putting your plan into action.

At the end of this program, attendees will learn how to:

  • Identify resources to learn about your community
  • Develop your approach to different types of organizations and businesses in your community based on their needs
  • Identify ways to continue the relationships developed through outreach opportunities
  • Identify ways to bring those you interact with back to the library

Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for PCI Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today
