Create Your Own Escape Room!

You are probably familiar with the idea of "escape rooms" - in the last five years, escape room businessess have exploded onto the entertainment scene. According to the Room Escape Artist blog database, there were only 22 escape rooms in the U.S. in 2014. As of November 2018, however, there were at least 2300 escape room businesses operating in the US! These businesses charge a fee to play their game (ranging from $30-$60 depending on the place) and the timed challenge usually lasts one to two hours. Like many entertainment trends, not everyone can afford to have an escape room experience, though, which is why libraries around the country are creating their own DIY escape room programming for people of all ages. Escape rooms don't have to be solely for entertainment, either, of course! According to School Library Journal, this type of activity allows teachers and librarians to teach using play and to foster problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills in their students/patrons. Escape rooms create an opportunity to experiment, fail, and try again in a low-stakes environment.

Many libraries and schools are DIY-ing their own escape rooms, including Adam Fisher, a Reference Associate at Lane Library's Fairfield branch.  Join Adam on September 19th to learn all about how to create and lead your own escape room programming in a SWON Level-Up Lab at Fairfield Lane.

SWON was also recently able to purchase two Breakout EDU kits using LSTA grant funds. Whether it's to entertain, teach, or both, Breakout EDU can also help you create your own escape room experience. The kits come with everything you need to create a fun and exciting escape room experience - including content. Breakout provides an online platform filled with tons of lesson plans and ideas, as well as resources on how to facilitate a Breakout EDU game. (You will be provided with a login to access these if you borrow from SWON.) These are now part of our Tech to Lend program, and are available to borrow for up to a month at a time. If you have questions about the kits or how to borrow please feel free to email me

Whether you work with children, teens, or adults, there are multiple ways you can create your very own escape room challenges centering around any topic you'd like!

IDEAL ’19: Advancing Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility in Libraries & Archives

Do you believe that diversity and inclusion are essential to personal and organizational excellence in the library and archives professions?

Are you doing groundbreaking research on diversity and inclusion-related topics and want to share it with your colleagues on an international platform?

Mark your calendar for IDEAL ‘19 to be held August 6-7, 2019, on the Ohio State University campus in Columbus, Ohio. A call for presentations, posters, and scholarships will follow in February 2019.

IDEAL, formerly the National Diversity in Libraries Conference, aims to foster awareness and appreciation of workplace diversity issues through the exploration of exemplary practice, contemporary theory, thought leadership, and strategy development for all those in the academic and public library, archives, and museum sectors.

IDEAL ‘19  will provide an opportunity for professionals at every level and across sectors to discuss how increasing workplace diversity and creating an inclusive workplace environment improves organizational effectiveness, creativity, adaptability, and relevance to the communities served by the organization.

As a result of participating in IDEAL ‘19, attendees will be able to:

Articulate the value of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in academic and public libraries and archives
Develop a robust strategy for workplace diversity and inclusion that aligns with organizational or community missions
Explore strategies for creating globally inclusive and culturally competent professions
See inclusion as a gateway to organizational excellence, social responsibility, and community engagement
Contribute to conversations about measuring the effectiveness of efforts to create inclusive, diverse, equitable, and accessible workplaces and communities.

Telling A People's Story: African-American Children's Illustrated Literature
This first-of-its-kind museum exhibition, featuring original art by African-American illustrators, looks at African-American cultural and historical identity through the lens of children's picture books. It is now a traveling panel exhibition made available for public schools, libraries, and universities and colleges.

Jason Shaiman is the Curator of Exhibitions at the Miami University Art Museum in Oxford, Ohio. Prior to his arrival at MUAm in August 2010, he served as the Chief Curator of Exhibitions at the University of South Carolina’s McKissick Museum. Shaiman received his BA in Art History from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and an MA in Art History and a Degree in Museum Studies from the University of South Carolina. He has curated more than 40 exhibitions, with Telling A People's Story being his most important accomplishment.
