OPAL 2019: High Touch Service in a High Tech World

Join OPAL on August 1-2 at the Athenaeum of Ohio in Cincinnati, Ohio, for the OPAL annual conference as we explore “High Touch Service in a High Tech World,” featuring twenty different breakout sessions, eight posters, and keynote speaker Richard Kong, director of the Skokie Public Library. The purpose of the conference is to connect, share research and best practices, and problem solve among academic libraries. Librarians also enjoy opportunities for face-to-face conversations and a supportive, collegial atmosphere in a variety of formal sessions and informal social events.

Academic librarians from around the state will present on topics including sustainable repositories, pitfalls of predatory journals, digitization for small libraries, maximizing student assistants in understaffed libraries, etc. Visit https://opal2019.sched.com/ to see the complete conference schedule, presentation and poster descriptions, speaker information, and who else is attending.

Register by July 10th at https://opal-libraries.org/OPAL2019/registration. You do not have to be affiliated with OPAL to attend. Sponsored by OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries), registration for the first two attendees from non-OPAL institutions is complimentary.

For more details about the conference including travel and accommodation suggestions, visit the OPAL 2019 Annual Conference LibGuide at https://opal-libraries.org/OPAL2019/home.

SWON Level Up Lab: Escape Rooms

You are probably familiar with the idea of "escape rooms" - in the last five years, escape room businessess have exploded onto the entertainment scene. According to the Room Escape Artist blog database, there were only 22 escape rooms in the U.S. in 2014. As of November 2018, however, there were at least 2300 escape room businesses operating in the US! These businesses charge a fee to play their game (ranging from $30-$60 depending on the place) and the timed challenge usually lasts one to two hours. Like many entertainment trends, not everyone can afford to have an escape room experience, though, which is why libraries around the country are creating their own DIY escape room programming for people of all ages. Escape rooms don't have to be solely for entertainment, either, of course! According to School Library Journal, this type of activity allows teachers and librarians to teach using play and to foster problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills in their students/patrons. Escape rooms create an opportunity to experiment, fail, and try again in a low-stakes environment.

Many libraries and schools are DIY-ing their own escape rooms, including Adam Fisher, a Reference Associate at Lane Library's Fairfield branch.  Join Adam on September 19th to learn all about how to create and lead your own escape room programming in a SWON Level-Up Lab at Fairfield Lane.

SWON was also recently able to purchase two Breakout EDU kits using LSTA grant funds. Whether it's to entertain, teach, or both, Breakout EDU can also help you create your own escape room experience. The kits come with everything you need to create a fun and exciting escape room experience - including content. Breakout provides an online platform filled with tons of lesson plans and ideas, as well as resources on how to facilitate a Breakout EDU game. (You will be provided with a login to access these if you borrow from SWON.) These are now part of our Tech to Lend program, and are available to borrow for up to a month at a time. If you have questions about the kits or how to borrow please feel free to email our Tech Educator, Emily

Whether you work with children, teens, or adults, there are multiple ways you can create your very own escape room challenges centering around any topic you'd like!

SWON Webinar: Weeding Juvenile and Young Adult Materials

Does weeding juvenile or young adult collections differ greatly from weeding materials for adults? This webinar will go over the basic steps of the weeding process (withdrawal of materials from a library collection) and how to apply that process to youth collections.

Presenter Sarah Geisler has worked in public libraries for over ten years, with experience in reference, children’s services, and collection development. She currently works as Collection Services Librarian at the Campbell County Public Library in Northern Kentucky. She has a B.A. in Asian Studies from Mount Holyoke College and an M.L.S. from Queens College, City University of New York, and she was a 2007 ALA Spectrum Scholar.

Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for SWON Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today!
