Take advantage of our Girls Who Code partnership and launch a FREE Club!

SWON is partnering with Girls Who Code again this year to bring free computer science opportunities to girls across our community. We would love for your school or library to host a Club

Girls Who Code Clubs are FREE programs for 3rd-5th or 6th-12th grade girls to join a sisterhood of supportive peers and role models who use computer science to change the world. Clubs are led by Facilitators, who can be teachers, computer scientists, librarians, parents, or volunteers from any background or field. Many Facilitators have NO technical experience and learn to code alongside their Club members. Any 18+ adult who is passionate about the movement is eligible to lead a Club - that means you!

To learn more about Girls Who Code programs, you can sign up for a Girls Who Code Webinar here. Join one of these webinars to learn more about our Clubs program and how to apply. During this webinar, you'll learn:

- The mission of Girls Who Code
- Clubs curriculum and program model
- How to launch a Club
- How to become a Community Partner and launch multiple Clubs in your community

You can also take a look at a step-by-step guide on how to start a Girls Who Code Club.

Please note this info session is for anyone who has not already applied to start a Club and is interested in learning more about our Clubs program in the United States. If you have already applied to start a Club, please check your email for next steps, including a link to our training webinar from clubs@girlswhocode.com.

APPLY TO START A CLUB HERE*

*Please Note: It is important that you indicate our partnership affiliation (SWON) on the Clubs Application in order to receive partnership benefits!

As a Girls Who Code Community Partner, any Clubs in our network are eligible to receive additional partnership benefits by indicating SWON Libraries on the Clubs Application!

Current 2018-19 Clubs have received an email with the new renewal process, where they can click the renewal button on the left side of Girls Who Code HQ.

Please let me know if you have any questions about how to get started, and thanks for supporting our partnership with Girls Who Code!

24th Annual Picture Book Read-In Early Bird Special

Early Bird Special! Register now and get $5 off. Ends July 26th.

SWON's Picture Book Read-In is a program for collection development staff, children's librarians, teachers, and childcare workers, in short, anyone who selects and/or reads books for children. We have thousands of recent titles (usually from the last two years) loaned to us for this event from six leading public library systems. Each attendee receives a printed guide listing all of the books. The day includes time for selecting and binge-reading picture books, discussing possible story time options with your peers and a presentation.

Agenda:

9:00-9:10 AM Light Breakfast, Intro, & Logistics

9:10-10:10 AM Telling A People's Story: African-American Children's Illustrated Literature, presented by Jason Shaiman of the Miami University Art Museum

12:00 PM Catered boxed lunches served

4:00-4:15 PM Prizes & Feedback Forms

Programs and Presenters:

Telling A People's Story: African-American Children's Illustrated Literature
This first-of-its-kind museum exhibition, featuring original art by African-American illustrators, looks at African-American cultural and historical identity through the lens of children's picture books. It is now a traveling panel exhibition made available for public schools, libraries, and universities and colleges.

Jason Shaiman is the Curator of Exhibitions at the Miami University Art Museum in Oxford, Ohio. Prior to his arrival at MUAm in August 2010, he served as the Chief Curator of Exhibitions at the University of South Carolina’s McKissick Museum. Shaiman received his BA in Art History from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and an MA in Art History and a Degree in Museum Studies from the University of South Carolina. He has curated more than 40 exhibitions, with Telling A People's Story being his most important accomplishment.

PCI Webinar - RA for All: Ten Rules of Basic Reader's Advisory Service

Readers Advisory belongs in every library, no matter its budget. The implementation of this vital service is the responsibility of every staff member-- from pages to directors, from those behind the scenes to the ones on the front lines. This program will remove the mystery behind providing great RA service.

Using her “Ten Rules of Basic RA Service” as a guide, Becky Spratford will use your own love of your favorite books to show you how to help any patron find their next great read. It's not as hard as you think. But more importantly, you will learn why a staff that can harness the power of sharing a great read will become a stronger team and improve service to all patrons.

Presenter Becky Spratford is a Readers' Advisor in Illinois specializing in serving patrons ages 13 and up.  She trains library staff all over the world on how to match books with readers through the local public library.  She runs the critically acclaimed RA training blog RA for All, and it’s evil twin, RA for All Horror, and is on the Steering Committee of the Adult Reading Round Table. You can connect with Becky on Twitter @RAforAll.

Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for PCI Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today
