Giving and Receiving Criticism in the Workplace

Being criticized or getting workplace and performance feedback, can be hard to take even when it is delivered correctly and on point. What are we really hearing when this happens?  What is the other person actually trying to say and how does this verbal dance influence the other dynamics in the library?

Applying simple to use coaching techniques, attendees will learn to deliver critical messages that produce results and in turn, be given the tools to filter out the noise and move towards better communication that produce positive results.  This interactive and engaging program will discuss ways to:

  • keep the conversation focused and on point
  • minimize the drama in the conversations
  • grow relationships with staff members while correcting their behaviors
  • help you remain calm
  • help you overcome past mistakes in delivering criticism to others

Presenter Kathy Zappitello has worked for sixteen years in Ohio libraries and is currently the Executive Director of the Conneaut Public Library in Conneaut, Ohio.  She also works as a producer, writer, actor, and director for one of Ohio's cable access channels that provides programming to households in Ohio and Western Pennsylvania and serves on the Executive Board for The Association for Rural and Small Libraries.

SWON Webinar - Weeding Juvenile and Young Adult Materials

Does weeding juvenile or young adult collections differ greatly from weeding materials for adults? This webinar will go over the basic steps of the weeding process (withdrawal of materials from a library collection) and how to apply that process to youth collections.

Presenter Sarah Geisler has worked in public libraries for over ten years, with experience in reference, children’s services, and collection development. She currently works as Collection Services Librarian at the Campbell County Public Library in Northern Kentucky. She has a B.A. in Asian Studies from Mount Holyoke College and an M.L.S. from Queens College, City University of New York, and she was a 2007 ALA Spectrum Scholar.

PCI Webinar - Sensory Storytime 101

More than 3.5 million American live with an autism spectrum disorder. The CDC estimates 1 in 68 US school children fall within the autism spectrum. An even greater number of children are impacted by developmental delays and/or disabilities.

Families impacted both by autism and developmental disabilities live in communities of all sizes. Providing programming for this demographic is an impactful way for the library to be an inclusive and supportive resource for families.

In this interactive webinar program, Jill Burket Ragase will give you a variety of tools that you will be able to use to:

Select program appropriate titles and activities for Sensory Storytimes

Present and adapt programs for multiple ages/audiences as well as programming area/library sizes

Create and deliver programs that allow children to continue learning and skill building beyond storytime.

Enhance storytime inclusion.

Learn the ins and outs of presenting a sensory storytime from an experienced librarian who also happens to parent a developmental disabled child. We’ll cover the librarian tips and tricks as well as things you can do to enhance inclusion and make this segment of your patron population feel welcome

Presenter Jill Burket Ragase has enthusiastically shared her passion for Youth Services as an Independent Library Consultant for four years. She earned her MLS from the University of Kentucky and is the former Children’s Librarian and Juvenile Collection Development Librarian for the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, an SLJ 5 star library and winner of the National Medal for Museum and Library Services. She is also the proud parent of two, yes two sets of boy/girl twins with her husband Mark in Cincinnati, OH.
